A&B's Nest Egg

Mon 28th Mar 2011

A&B's Nest Egg A&B Engineering has operated from their current premises for over 30 years and the company has refused to move from Derby Lane on many occasions. It is felt that moving would disrupt the staff, most of whom live local to the offices in Old Swan, and being honest, we are proud of our workspace.

The company faced a quandary as its successful expansion has meant it needs more room and office space. The Directors therefore jumped at the chance of acquiring the neighbouring property when it became available recently. This has immediately led to a larger car park, and will mean more office space, better storage facilities and a better working environment for all of the staff when the building is refurbished. The expected completion date was late 2011. That is, until disaster struck!

As a responsible contractor whose main focus is ensuring that our clients are delighted with the quality of our work and that our staff operate in the safest of environs we could not have legislated for what was to happen next.

We have worked on hundreds of sites over the years and have experienced all sorts of logistical problems beyond our control including asbestos, Health & Safety issues, out of hours deliveries, adverse weather conditions and the list is by no means exhaustive.

We take pride in the fact that our workforce has many years of experience and that they can manage most situations, but even they, and please remember some of our team have over 30 years in the job, couldn’t resolve this issue. Pigeons!

The problem came to light when some repairs on the roof were underway to seal the building. A nest was discovered and within it, 2 pigeon chicks.

The foreman on the project, Jack Holness, who is responsible for the site, being an animal lover, immediately stopped work on the build to ensure the safety of the pigeons.

“Ever since I was a youngster I have always had a thing for young birds, especially twins” said Mr Holness, “Removing the chicks to a place of safety was a difficult job but we have managed to move them now and they have prospered. It wasn’t the first time that I have taken 2 young chicks out. I was trilled with it all!”

The construction has now continued and is set to be completed on time and to budgie!
