Introduction:
A&B Engineering completed the Mechanical & Electrical services to the Ancillary Buildings at HMP Altcourse in August 2007. Working in an operational prison offered new challenges and procedures that were successfully undertaken and delivered on programme.
Mechanical:
A&B modified and extended the existing underground essential services including gas, mains cold water and fire hydrant to accommodate the construction of a new houseblock and three ancillary buildings. All works were completed without disruption to the operation of the prison. Refurbishment of the existing main kitchen facility took place to accommodate new cooking appliances and ancillary equipment. All works where carried out during night shifts included gas, domestic services and drainage modifications, again without disruption to the operation of the prison.
The Education Block includes 7 classrooms and 4 vocational training facilities. The ground floor plantroom houses heating boilers and a gas fired hot water generator that provide heating and hot water to the building. Wall mounted heat recovery units and local extract fans provide the ventilation requirements throughout the building. The Gym and Workshop is a dual facility. The ground floor is a car workshop fitted with compressed air line and wall mounted vehicle exhaust system. The first floor is a gymnasium, with wall mounted air conditioning units and low level radiators providing a controlled temperature within the space. The stores building maximizes its floor space with the installation of high level heating coils controlled via wall mounted thermostats. Ventilation is via wall mounted extract fans.
Electrical:
A&B installed site wide cabling network for Fire alarm, data, and LV services. Secure installation of general lighting and emergency lighting system. All fittings are provided with tamper proof fixings and covers to prevent un-authorized access.
General and mechanical power supplies. Each of the three buildings having a new LV distribution section board supplied via the site wide network. External perimeter and area floodlighting associated with a secure environment. These systems where incorporated within the BMS to provide instant lighting in the event of a security breach.
A fully networked addressable fire alarm installation was completed and monitored power supplies to workshop with override facility via the BMS. Also included in the project was a car park and perimeter lighting installation, along with a lightning conductor installation
