| Client: | Metropolitan Borough of Wirral |
| Main Contractor: | GallifordTry |
| Architect: | Wirral Technical Services Department |
| Value: | £400,000 |
Introduction:
The project consisted of a refurbishment of the existing 1976 recreation centre, involving the replacement of the general ventilation and swimming pool air handling units with associated extract fans and ductwork modifications. Also included in the rrefurbishment was the lighting and power circuits incorperating energy efficient systems.
Mechanical:
The refurbishment was part of the upgrading of the changing room areas and the replacement of the domestic water requirements for the area. The pool hall ventilation system refurbishment consisted of replacing the swimming pool air handling equipment with a Munters heat recovery and dehumidification unit and modifications to the plantroom ductwork arrangement. The pool hall supply grilles were also replaced to improve the air distribution throughout the space.
The wet and dry change areas of the building were remodelled and refurbished with a new general supply air handling unit and ductwork distribution revisions to accommodate the new layout. As the existing hot and cold water storage equipment was nearing the end of its useful working life the refurbishment also entailed the replacement of the hot water storage calorifiers with two new gas fired water heaters and a full overhaul of the existing cold water storage tank.
Upon completion the installation was balanced to the original design volumes and set to work.
Electrical:
A&B also included for a full electrical installation within the refurbished areas, providing both general & emergency lighting together with all relevant local power supplies. A co-ordinated isolation of the incoming electrical supply was arranged with the utility supplier in order to upgrade the main LV distribution network and installation of new 400A MCCB panel.
Within the new lighting scheme and in conjunction with the Client's directive A&B included for local movement detection sensors to control the lighting throughout the new changing areas to maximise energy efficiency. All fittings and accessories within the wet change areas where selected and installed to comply with current BS and specific environmental conditions found in such an area.
The existing Fire, Security and PA systems installed at the leisure centre where extended upon and where necessary upgraded to afford protection and coverage for the redesigned layout of the building.
